United Travelling with bike

Happy New Year Everyone!

I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post in, but I couldn't find any other one that would fit the bill.

I'm flying to Maui on United at the end of January and I want to bring my road bike. I'm a Star alliance Elite Member. On the United website this is what their policy for bikes:

"If the bicycle(s) are packed in a container that is over 50 pounds (23kg) and/or 62 (158 cm) total linear inches (L + W + H), a $100 service charge applies each way for travel between the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and a $200 service charge applies each way for all other travel. If the bicycle(s) are packed in a container that is less than 50 pounds (23kg) and 62 (158 cm) total linear inches (L + W + H), there is no bicycle service charge, but, if applicable, the first or second checked baggage service charge applies.

If the bicycle(s) are packed in a container that is less than 50 pounds (23kg) and 62 (158 cm) total linear inches (L + W + H), there is no bicycle service charge, but, if applicable, the first or second checked baggage service charge applies."

I have no issues getting the bike + case below 50 lb, but the total 62 linear inches is an issue as I'd have to fold the frame in half to be able to meet it (I think this is on purpose so all adult bikes will be charged their $100 fee).

What they don't mention is if there are any exceptions for Star Alliance Elite members (ie, I know I get 3 free bags, so if I just check in one bag with bike but it's over the 62" total linear inches, do they still charge the fee?)

Also, any advice/experience fellow travelers have on traveling with a bike on United, I'd love to hear about it.

SB
