If one is MRing (or not MRing) and wants to maximize their chances to use an RPU or luck into a CPU, are there any strategies they can employ?
For example, are there routes with notably poor chances (someone said EWR-SFO was among the worst) and ones with decidedly better chances (which?)? Try to book planes with the greatest number of seats in the forward cabin (not A319s or A320s)? Check number of seats for sale or in award inventory? (How exactly does one get the best handle on that? Do upgrades and award seats come from the same inventory, or does one use get priority over the other?)
I'm most interested in flying ex-NYC to HNL, and it will probably be ex-JFK or ex-LGA rather than ex-EWR because of the sustantially cheaper fares from the former two. Are the chances likely to be better/worse trying for the upgrade on a non-stop flight or on flights connecting through SFO or ORD?
Any help trying to game this will be appreciated?
