I've started to learn more about the alliances and fare class and crediting star alliance partners to united. I saw a reference of using ITA matrix to figure out the fair class. I've put together a sample of my logic. Let me know if it's correct.
Sample trip:
LAX to SGN August 1 returning August 15.
1. Search ITA matrix and find cheapest flight is on asiana.

2. Look up united partner fare class for asiana.

3. Look up asiana fare class for desired booking

It's a "V" so, it means u'll get 70% of the miles when credited to united. A 16,000 mile roundtrip would earn you 11200 miles on asiana.
4. Check out on flyasiana.com and enter your united MP number at checkout.

**Note, had you wanted to earn more miles, you could have selected the pricier asiana flight for $1252

Since return segment is "S", you would earn 5,600 miles lax to SGN (70%) and 8,000 miles SGN to LAX (100%)
On the other hand, if you wanted to book EVA....
1. Fare

It's an "X" fare

Which means you'll get 50% of the miles, or 8,000 united miles for the 16,000 mile round tirp.
