I frequently visit home office near Basel and either drive to Zurich to catch the flight to EWR and beyond, or take a LH puddle jumper to FRA to connect with UA to EWR.
I have never understood why I am not able to check in on line before checking in at FRA gate. I am also unable to check in on line for the little BSL-FRA flight. When I arrive at BSL and check in my luggage I get two boarding passes from LH - one for the flight to FRA and one for the flight to EWR.
I have learned to drive to the BSL airport the day before the flight and check in at that time at the ticket counter, in hopes that early check in gives me a better shot at upgrade.
The other problem is that I try to use a GPU for the United flight to EWR but am always placed on standby (I am 1K). On the United website I am on the standby list for upgrade, but when I check in at BSL, that standby list disappears. Last month I was not upgraded, but I was still credited 1.5 X mileage.
The puddle jumper is more convenient than driving to Zurich and messing with a rental car return.
