I'm the sucker that paid for my UA "business first" seats

Hubby and I had business in Germany and bought two business elite seats on UA. $$$$.

Outbound on UA 900 SFO-FRA was uneventful, but food was absolutely dreadful - both meals. I think we would have had a tastier experience buying the coach snack boxes. Seriously. Service was OK.

The return was really uncomfortable. UA 903 MUC-IAD. An equipment change meant we had the old 777-200 and there was lots of grumbling in Business First. My husband and I were in 9H and 9J and both of us had broken seats. In addition, my tray table was broken. FAs said that UA doesn't even bother to fix the problems anymore since eventually the seats will get switched out. Thanks, UA for 9+ really miserable hours.

To make matters worse, the FAs were really cranky, service was super rushed and uncomfortable for both meals, and the food was, again, largely inedible. I couldn't figure out why the service was so harried - was it the small galley?

One of the FAs gave us two "please accept our apology" cards. I went online to redeem this "token of appreciation" and after typing in two screens of info, was served this message:

"There has been an error processing your request. Please try your request again, or contact us at www.united.com/feedback."

That's rich!

So then I went online to see if other travelers shared my frustrations and discovered I could take a Delta challenge to get the same level of lowly elite that I now have on UA and get a Delta AMEX card that would net me elite without flying a single mile.

My husband says he never wants to fly UA again, and I'm wondering if it just sucks all the way around, regardless of airline.

We don't fly enough for the highest level of elite, so we always pay real money for business class seats. But the level of service and the condition of the planes in no way justifies the expense! We also wondered if we are the only people on the plane actually paying for first or business class.

Are we suckers or what?

We have 3 international trips coming up next year and are thinking maybe it makes more sense to fly Delta "Economy Comfort"- suffer the leg room, and use the many thousands of dollars saved for something else.

Thoughts?
