I am (presumably) dropping from 1K to Gold after only about 26K PQMs last year. I am a MM so keeping Gold by virtue of that. At least for this year.
(And yes, I am one of the long time 1Ks upset at the broken promises, devaluations, service and operational performance, etc., of the new UA, who took his business elsewhere after 3/3; unless UA throws me some type of magical bone perhaps with a soft landing to Plat, that pattern will likely continue and I'll choose UA only when it makes sense)
I have Hawaii-mainland one way flights booked for Mrs. u2vox and me in April (flying AS outbound), currently using 80K miles for two standard Y awards. I have been watching to see if any saver Y awards open on the flights we want on either of two days, or if any saver F awards open for the same number of miles on either of those same two days. As a 1K, I'm used to being able to do that w/o consequence pretty much up until the day of travel, to snag lower mileage seats or F seats at the same miles cost for the same flights as inventory control makes them available.
Assuming I drop to Gold, and since I currently hold two standard awards already booked, I'd like to know for after 1/31:
- Would I need to pay a redeposit fee to put the miles back in from a standard award I already have booked?
- Does whether I have to pay vary based on whether I rebook at all (e.g., if something better on AS opens up), or whether I rebook on the same date or the day later? (never been sure how the whole "same date / same routing" aspects work here when it comes to rebooking award flights)
- Anything else I should be considering here to avoid similar charges?
I could always put those seats back before 2/1 since they are standard awards, and rebook later, but right now we have our preferred exit row seats and I'd prefer not to risk someone else taking them.
Thanks for any advice here!
