Better to connect in LHR or ORD from Europe?

I was trying to book a direct flight from BRU-IAD but saver awards in BusinessFirst are gone. My next two best options are either connecting at ORD and then returning to DCA (~3 hour layover) entirely on United or connecting at LHR (2.5 hour layover) to IAD with the BRU-LHR segment on Brussels Airlines.

Pros for the ORD route are that it leaves BRU at 11AM vs 9AM and I'd rather not have to leave for the airport so early. Additionally taxes are $100 less for two people. I am unsure of any cons other than that I'd have an extra half hour layover and total travel time is 1:45 longer.

So any reasons to go with the connection at LHR? Never been to ORD, only T4 and T5 at LHR. Would both flights be in the same terminal at LHR? What about at ORD? Any differences in the lounge? Both longhaul flights are on the same type of aircraft (777).

Finally, I don't see the ability to pay for fare lock. Is this always available? Thank you!!
