I just received an email from a colleague who took a roundtrip on UA between SFO and JFK. I was quite surprised, as I thought this route was designated for special service above and beyond usual UA flights.
"I was in the Economy Plus section which might have had slightly more leg room than the economy section, maybe a couple of inches at most. When the person in front of me put their seat back my knees still had to go sideways. What was really uncomfortable was that in both directions I was jammed up against another guy, so that for six hours we were elbow to elbow, battling for space on a small armrest. The other unhappy result was the food offered. For $9 I bought the "tapos" hoping to get something edible, but instead I got a box with an assortment of crackers, hummus, some cheese, a few nuts and raisons, some potato chips, all of which were impossible to open without a sharp object of some sort. Never again. I actually wrote to United about this, the first time I have ever complained. It didn't help that the plane was completely full, as usual these days, it took half an hour from leaving the gate to taking off, then six hours and thirty minutes in the air (headwind) and when we finally landed at SFO there was no one to guide the plane into its place."
