We complain about UA often. With cause.
However, I'm here to say that after 17 sectors during the last thirteen days - fifteen of them in widebody J on UA, SQ, TG and AC, I find that UA's AVOD is best in class.
I did not say :-: best in class :-: please note...we all know which product distinguishes itself as such.
Anyway here's why. The UA screen is larger than all except the SQ in the recently retrofitted regional-J cabins. UA offers more movies, and far more audio choice. The UA noise-cancelling phones also work well and are more convenient than those of TG and AC. The selection of movies doesn't contain notorious Canadian "Avant Garde" options, but I'm not sure they add value for me and anyway there are many independent choices on the UA system.
I know SQ "real" J - like the 380 I flew from SIN to LHR in Dec - offers an even larger screen and a good selection but even it is not notably superior.
