Don't know if this is new or something that's known in these parts.
Was just searching for a flight NYC-TLV and one of the options confused me for a moment. I couldn't figure out how "Time on the ground in Los Angeles, CA (LAX) is 1 hour 28 minutes." could possible enter into things.
It turned out the routing was EWR-JFK-TLV. The EWR-JFK was UA1201 which is actually EWR-LAX-JFK on two different planes.
I can't see any way to abuse this for mile runs offhand since it'll presumably award the EWR-JFK distance. Perhaps booking it at a time when IRROPS are frequent?
