Many months ago, I purchased ten tickets from ORD - PUJ for an extended family spring break. Due to the fact that one PNR can hold a maximum of six passengers, and the way the fares were changing as I bought tickets, I ended up buying ten tickets on three different PNRs. Six tickets were on the first PNR and two tickets each on the other two PNRs.
Two days ago, we received good news that my brother, who had been looking for a job, had received an offer. Thus, he won't be making the trip with us.
As I was buying the tickets, I purchased them somewhat randomly in terms of assigning family members to reservations as I thought we'd all be traveling as a group and could change seat assigments amongst ourselves before we boarded. Due to fares, I ended up with four discount F seats and 6 Y seats on the outbound. My brother and brother in law were booked on one of the two seat PNR records and received two of the F seats.
My issue is the following - I can cancel my brother's flight and he'll receive a credit less the $150 fee for use on future travel on United. However, I am losing the F seat on the way down as a part of this. I called UA and they said they can't just swap a name from another PNR into this PNR so that I can hold the seat.
I totally understand and accept this. The reason I am even trying to sort it out is that it was my plan to have the four grandparents in this family travel on F together on the way down, even though none of them are currently assigned to that cabin. Since my brother won't be joining us, I am losing the ability to seat them all together in F.
Does anyone have any ideas or guidance? Can UA Insider help with this? The solution would be for me to be able to switch his name with another name on a different PNR for the exact same flight. I'd then cancel his reservation on that PNR and lose a seat in Y rather than F.
I was the original purchaser of all ten tickets. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
