I want to give surprise anniversary gift to my wife on her return trip SFO-SIN. I have enough miles for saver award either in business or first class but seems it is not possible to get saver award entirely in the first class: maximum one can get is first class in the first leg of the journey (to KIX) and business on KIX-SIN on SQ with connection time of 8 hours something in KIX.
Interesting enough, there is eastward award travel option SFO-FRA-SIN, first segment on UA, second - on LH but this is available only in December, while I need travel in June/July max, plus LH is only economy. Even it would be possible to book business/first I really doubt that two >12h flights make any sense, with 12 connection time at FRA.
Also, I see HN flights available during the same timeframe, but only in economy class.
Do I understand correctly that only CA and SQ allow using award flight on UA's miles and only in business class but not on First?
Do you have any successful experience booking the first class saver award on this route? If yes, what is the magic? Any thoughts/ideas/experience?
