Do we have recourse when UA wouldn't let us board next flt. due to late a.c. arrival?

Good afternoon and thanks for taking a look and offering ideas! I will try to put as much of the information below as possible, if you have questions please don't hesitate to ask as I am trying to determine if the group of people affected can recoup any of our costs!

Airline: United Airlines
Date: Monday, March 18, 2013

Departure: Minneapolis, MN
Connecting: Houston, TX
Arrival: Belize City, Belize

There were 12 people on this flight affected by the events below and we have all spoken and have each other's contact information to move forward with any suggestions or actions that anyone feels will provide the best result.

On monday morning our flight was scheduled to leave MSP and Arrive at IAH as follows:

Depart: 9:20 am
Arrive: 12:20 pm

Connecting to another flight to BZE as follows:

Depart IAH @ 1:00 pm
Arrive BZE @ 3:33 pm CST

We pulled back from the gate on-time in MSP however were delayed 20 minutes for deicing and arrived at IAH at 12:40 pm.

The 12 people on the plane were able to get to the front of the plane, sprint through two terminals and arrive at the gate at 12:57 pm.

To everyone's dismay we learned that United had sold our seats and left early from the gate. In addition, this was the last flight of the day to BZE and we would all have to find arrangements for the night.

When we went to customer service we were told that because it was an ATC delay that UNITED would only be offering $50 to local motels and that they would not be responsible for anything else.

Other details:

1. A number of us on the plane all had $400/night rooms that we were not able to get a refund for.

2. Many people ended up spending $100+ of their own money because the voucher was not good for anything.

3. They left early so they could put the stand-bys on the plane even though we all made it before the scheduled departure.

4. Two groups within our larger group that was left behind had friends/family on the plane that left who were pleading with staff to hold the plane as we were communicating that we were coming.

QUESTIONS:

1. In genearl, do we have a case for being pretty upset?

2. Do we have a case to recoup money from United for their decision to leave early? Some groups had $1K or more because of this.

3. Basically, are we screwed?

Thanks in advance, not really sure what to do and thought that this forum might provide useful feedback!

Nick
