Getting discouraged (trying to combine MP points to book award travel)

I have done my due diligence and accumulated 55k+ points each in 2 accounts for my wife and I. With all the advertising saying you can combine the points of family members I thought I was ready to snag International tickets. Combine the miles for one 110k round trip and buy the other! But now I see in the fine print I might have to pay to combine the accounts ($15 per 1000miles) and may only be able to transfer 15000 points not enough to each 110k. Or there is the expensive option of buying points at $35 per 1000 points which would cost me $350 per 10k points. Basically buying enough points would be more expensive than just buying the tickets outright. Bottomline I am discouraged and about to give up. My final option (as I see it) is to call United and try to 'buy' with points each of us a one way ticket at 55k each and then buy a separate one way ticket for each of us with my charge card and pay the fee for phone service. This is my first experience with MileagePlus but so far it has not gone well. My other experience with reward points has been the super easy SouthWest program. Am I misunderstanding the proceedures or are there really this many hoops to jump thru? If so I definitely will not be with United Mileage Plus very much longer. Suggestions?
