Cancel a portion of a return - any possibility of residual credit?

Tried searching and didn't see this exact scenario (or I couldn't come up with the right keywords).

I've got an MR scheduled to SJU via EWR. Unfortunately, due to a new work commitment, I have to be in DEN the day after my return. Due to my expected late return to LAX, there was no way to get to DEN that night and leaving the next morning is too much of a risk. So, I inquired about changing the ticket and got an obscene quote (>$500). Instead I have booked a one way from EWR with a stop in DEN and then home after my meetings (less than half of the ticket change quote). So, the question is, can I get any residual credit for a portion of my return (i.e. the lest segment of a two segment return journey SJU-EWR-LAX)? This is of course assuming that any residual credit for that one leg is higher than the $150 change fee that would go along with it.

Even if the residual value isn't higher, I'm assuming I should cancel that last segment out of courtesy. Maybe in the UC in EWR after arriving from SJU?
