My parents are flying from SFO-EWR in May on United, and though they have absolutely no status on United, they have a few miles laying around, enough to upgrade both of them to first on the eastbound red-eye (plus $75/person). Since we find it almost impossible to use miles for actual flights, this seemed like a nice way to ensure a comfortable night's sleep and a good value per mile.
Please excuse me if this is a dumb question, but I thought I'd ask the frequent travelers in here: They are currently wait-listed. What are the odds that they successfully get upgraded to first class (with no status but having purchased the waitlisted upgrade more than a month in advance), and when do you typically find out?
Thanks for your help.
