Need help with mixed award and economy+miles tickets

After a lengthy phone conversation I managed to book RT tickets for myself, my wife and our infant yesterday for travel in late Nov from LAX to MAA and return in early Jan.

For the infant it was a 10% ticket (in business), so no question there.

For my wife I wanted to book a business saver, which I got for the outbound but not for the return. So I booked a standard award for the return and got her waitlisted for a saver award. Is this a good strategy? I figured since I am Plat and there are no award redeposit fees I had nothing to lose here. Please advise. Also, if someone can let me know when there is a saver award for MAA-FRA-EWR-LAX on Jan 1 I would appreciate it. I don't have EF subscription. The MAA-FRA leg is on LH and the rest on UA.

For myself I paid for a ticket in B fare and got the MAA-FRA sector instantly confirmed for an upgrade, as well as the domestic sectors. However, the DEN-FRA, FRA-MAA (both onward) and FRA-EWR (return) sectors are not confirmed yet. The latter is waitlisted. For DEN-FRA and FRA-MAA, since they are on LH, I don't think you can waitlist it (am I right?). However, the agent told me that they have added a note to the reservation asking to be confirmed as soon as LH opens up space. Is this usual procedure? I want to make sure I have been given the correct information. Since I booked 7 months in advance, I think I should get the upgrades at some point but want to be sure I am doing things right. Do I have to keep following up on this with UA reservations? Again, a tip from someone with EF would help a lot.

Thanks much!
