I have two paid tickets that for my wife and I that were issued last May. For medical reasons, we were not able to travel and had to cancel. I was not able to get a refund (didn't try that hard), but now don't want to let the entire value of the tickets evaporate. The prior tickets were for a roundtrip between SFO and LHR were each a total of $1200 with more than half the ticket in taxes. My question is, if we were to use the value of these tickets to purchase new tickets (with a change fee that I will seek to reduce with letter from doctor), is there any way to get a refund in taxes if the new price on the ticket is $700 and only $10 in taxes? Said another way, is the $600 or so in taxes per ticket for the old ticket essentially non-refundable?
