Exit row, seat 20A. Found during return flight to BOS. I was able to see the mobile boarding pass for the pax's connection to SBA and retrieve his name and MileagePlus#. The phone was password protected so I couldn't search for contact info in the texts/phone numbers. Turned in the pax's name/MP# and device to the gate agent in BOS and hope to hear that it was returned.
General question - what's the best way to ensure devices are returned to their rightful owners. At 7 am EDT and 4 am PDT, I assumed the phone wasn't going to ring anytime soon and decided the gate agent could look up his contact info and would likely return it. I probably would have been willing to ship the phone had I been able to contact the owner to discuss his preference prior to leaving the airport. I wasn't about to take the device from the airport without speaking to the owner first.
