Help with married segments and PerksPlus redemption

I'm trying to redeem a PerksPlus certificate valid for K-class travel within the US, Canada, and Caribbean. I identified suitable connecting flights AAA-BBB and BBB-CCC each of which has K inventory. But the itinerary as a whole, AAA-BBB-CCC shows K0. I reached this conclusion both from ExpertFlyer and from doing the through search on United.com (entering the certificate code, and checking the itinerary as a whole plus its two components). Relatively straightforward married segments, I guess. But super annoying -- if the inventory is available segment by segment, one feels like it should be available for the entire journey, especially since this is the only possible connection for these cities within the United system.

I called United web support and asked an agent to book the inventory segment by segment. She understood what that meant but, after consulting with a help desk, said that's not permitted on these certificates.

Does anyone know whether the agent is correct? Any way around the married segment logic?

I tried using United.com's Multiple Destinations feature to request the segments. But United.com reported that "The type of itinerary entered is not valid for this promotion." Looks like the United.com logic will not allow a Multiple Destination booking with a PerksPlus certificate.

(In case it matters, route is BOS-EWR-SDQ.)
