DL mole here. I'm hoping to get some advice and information. My young (they are 18/19 yrs old) cousin and six of his friends were flying today PWM-IAD-CAE (Columbia, SC). UA5737, IAD-CAE, canceled and UA has them rebooked for tomorrow. Three or four on the 12:40 pm departure out of IAD, the remainder on the 9:50pm departure out of IAD -- a 24+ hour delay.
I asked him to ask the UA agent about flying US out of DCA and he said the UA agent said no and wants them all at the airport tomorrow together. Those on the 12:40 flight will go, the others hopefully standby until that 9:50pm departure. Ten hours waiting at an airport after overnighting?!?
Is this typical? They got hotel rooms. Should they expect something more? Compensation? A 24+ hour delay for a rather short domestic hop seems absurd. They are taking it rather lightly. I'd be more of an "active participant" in finding a faster way on UA's dime to CAE.
Edited to add: was the flight cancelled due to weather?
