Changing Award for 12 months or more?

Chances are there's an answer to the following buried somewhere in this forum but I haven't managed to find it, so please excuse me asking

Idm a MM with lifetime *Gold. And thank you PMCO for allowing me to credit all EQMs including partners, predecessor airlines like Eastern and predecessor partners in Sky Team, and even some Maximizer miles. So change fees are zero and cancellation fee is $100.

We have a big family trip planned to Greece for July 2014 where I'll be looking to book perhaps as many as 10 award round RT EWR-ATH and BOS-ATH on UA or partners. There's a fair possibility that we may have to postpone the trip for a year but I would like to grab any available flights as they come available. If I cancel and rebook, I stand to lose 10 x $100 = $1,000. So it's much better to change the flight which has no fee for me if changed more than 21 days out. But as I understand it the replacement flight has to be within 12 months of the original flight, and moreover, the replacement flights wouldn't be available for booking at the time of the change.

So it possible to change the flights to an interim booking as a holding device and then later book the desired replacement flight. For instance, I book EWR-ATH for July 28 2014, then change it to January 28 2015, the change that flight to July 29 2015. Would that work? or would I have to change the final flight to July 27 or earlier?
