Any way to check *A upgrade awards before ticketing?

My wife and I are planning to fly transpac in the fall on one *A carrier or another and would like to purchase coach tickets and upgrade with miles. Is there any way to tell if there is availability without first buying the (nonrefundable) tickets? Sorry if this has been asked before. If so, please post a link, don't flame! :p
