So I have just over 300,000 United miles that I'd like to use for 2 tickets for my honeymoon going from US to Europe (assuming I can find two Saver award seats). Timing-wise, we want to go for 3 weeks next summer (leaving June or July 2014). We'd like to fly First class (or Business class if First isn't an option.) Given the timing, I'm just starting to see booking options in June 2014 and it doesn't look very promising.
We live in LA so prefer to depart from LAX or SFO but fine with connecting in IAH, JFK/EWR, ORD, etc and since we are seeing several places in Europe, we could fly into and out of any European hub. I definitely echo what others have been reporting about really scarce award seat inventory. I did a similar trip with AA miles to Australia three years ago and there were a lot more options.
I thought flying into Frankfurt or Munich would present some good options on Lufthansa but I'm not seeing anything other than economy seats being offered using United miles - which is too bad because I've read great reviews on their premium class cabins :(
Does anyone have experience/advice redeeming United miles for First/Business seats from US to Europe? Any good experiences with Swiss or Turkish? United has talked a lot about their investments in United Global First but my experience with international travel has taught me to almost always go with the non-US airline when given a choice (sad but true I suppose).
