The story of my bad, bad day trying to get to Sydney tonight (not there yet). Booked originally on UA 6409 (4:54 PM) from PDX -SFO and on to Sydney. First calls started about noon - surprised me in that I had been moved to a flight that I couldn't even make. That got me to calling around and I realized that there were going to be rolling delays that would cause me problems. I tried to get moved to UA 995 which left after 6409, but the 1K line agent offered, but was generally unhelpful - so I got ready to go to the airport.
At about 2:30 I got a call that the 4:54 had been right out cancelled and I had been rebooked on UA 496 - the last flight out to SFO - which would be a tight, but doable connection.
Checked my bags (no issues - indicators at the kiosk) then went to the Club. When I got there, the concierge asked me where I was going and I flippantly said "that depends on United" and then I told her Sydney.
I had just sat down when she came up to me and said - 496 won't make your connection (has a wheels up time of 10:25 PM) and you should take 995 (which I had already tried to make - but was told it was full). She was a pro and got me a seat and (hopefully) transferred my bags - but this leads to my question - why is this sort of stuff secret? Why didn't OPS push this through to my record so that someone would have stopped me in the process.
I'm hoping I make my flight, but if I had just showed up at the airport at departure time with the "knowledge" from the systems that the plane was on time, I'd have been livid.
