So my spouse and I had the perfect Star Alliance award flights booked using United miles for a 10 year anniversary trip to the Maldives...
LAX-ICN OZ201 11:50 am - 6:10 pm next day (O)
ICN-SIN SQ603 12:20 am - 6:05 am (I)
SIN-MLE SQ462 10:05 am - 11:35 am (I)
...only to have Singapore Airlines cancel their SIN-MLE daytime flights on most days (including our day of travel) and rebook us on SIN-MLE SQ452 8:35 pm - 10:10 pm (I) that evening. Since seaplanes don't run at night, this would mean that we would miss the first night of our hotel reservation.
Due to prohibitive expense, we cannot change our hotel dates. Thus, our options are as follows:
1) Accept the change and the longer layover in SIN (now 14 hours), overnight in MLE, and take the first seaplane to the resort the next morning (losing the first night of a 6 night stay). We'd of course explain the situation to the resort beforehand so they don't think we're a no-show and cancel our entire reservation. On the plus side, since we will have already paid for the previous night, we'll be able to check into our villa immediately and won't have to wait until the usual afternoon check-in time.
2) Change our flights to leave a day earlier. The flights in our original itinerary would not available, but United can rebook us on the following:
SFO-NRT UA837 11 am - 3:10 pm (O)
NRT-SIN UA803 5:35 pm - 12:20 am (O)
SIN-MLE SQ452 8:35 pm - 10:10 pm (X)
We'd have to give up Asiana First for United GlobalFirst, our SIN layover would be even longer at 20 hours, and our SIN-MLE flight would be in Economy. However, we would arrive in MLE one day earlier, again overnighting and taking the seaplane to the resort the following morning, but not missing any of our originally booked 6 night stay.
What would you do? Thank you in advance for your input!
