I have been making and rapidly cancelling/changing a lot of award bookings for a family member who's visiting a gravely ill relative.
Saw something really weird today:
(*) Pax cancelled trip at the last minute.
(*) Was unable to refund online ("this requires special handling, please call MileagePlus") but was able to change online to a later weekend using the credit from the cancelled flight.
(*) Pax has a last minute need to travel tomorrow, so I tried to change that reservation again to the flight tomorrow. I see an extra "$50 change fee". (I give up, don't make the change, and book a fresh itinerary from scratch instead).
Where could united.com be getting $50 from? I hold UA 1K status and should pay $0 for award ticket changes; if UA didn't correctly recognize my status, a General Member should pay $100 for changes within 21 days of travel; but the only $50 fee I know of is for a Silver member to book or change within 21 days of departure. Neither i nor the traveler is UA Silver!
Not a big deal (can always call the MPSC to cancel & redeposit these trips if I need to), just a weird quirk. Wondering if anyone has guesses why it might happen.
Having UA awards handy, and being able to find inventory on short notice, has been a real godsend for the BOS-CLE nonstops. I'm so happy that we can spend time & money worrying about other more important things.
