My husband and I were scheduled to fly on the Dreamliner today as the 1st leg of a trip from NYC to the west coast. When United informed us that the Dreamliner had been delayed, we took advantage of the offer to switch (with no change fee) to another flight. we made the change by phone with an agent, since the website couldn't do it.
UA6422, JFK-SFO looked good because of the time and availability of BC and FCC seats. We're both million milers, me Platinum and my husband 1K, so we saw upgrades in our future.
Too bad the agent didn't bother to mention that this flight doesn't allow complimentary upgrades. Nor was their any indication of this restriction on the web site, which we visited multiple times to make seat changes and check the availability of what we thought were potential upgraded seats.
When I checked us in yesterday, I got the message that we were put on the upgrade list. But we never showed up on it. A subsequent call to the Mileage Plus line revealed the secret story: no complimentary upgrades. Had we figured this out more than 24 hours before the flight, we could have used one of our many Regional Upgrades, the agent told us. She (and her supervisor) agreed that we were right...but no way to fix the situation. I guess it's too bad our ESP wasn't working...
The whole thing feels deceptive to me!
