HKG: Why are flights from ORD & EWR so far away?

Hello,

I'm attempting the connection @ HKG to SIN via the EWR route.

- Why does connecting to this flight in HKG take so long, with the planes so far away?
- Isn't this plane the same one that originates in ORD?
