So I mostly fly Oneworld for business, but I've been doing a lot of aspirational travel with points on Star Alliance airlines due to the UR earning opportunities over the last few years.
About a month ago, I remember reading a forum/blog/article about the ability to pay the saver rate for a united flight, even if there are no saver awards available. The deal (if i remember correctly) was that you could be upgraded to the Business/First class seats if/when availability opened up prior to the flights. If nothing opened up before the flights though, you could still go on the waitlist at the airport, and they would put you at the top of the list to be upgraded.
The real kicker though, was that if you weren't actually upgraded, you could call up and have the miles redeposited.
Now I've tried to search high and low to find this article/blog post, but i can't for the life of me find any info about this (i'm sure there is an easy keyword i'm missing).
Can someone help point me in the right direction. I would love to fly first class home from Sydney in a few weeks. I have the miles for me and the wife, no award inventory, but plenty of open seats available online (so i figure I'd have a good shot at this going through if I can find the info).
As always, thanks for the help/support FTers
