My wife, who is 1k, is flying this afternoon from IAD-LAX on an "M" class fare booked last week. When her work travel agency booked the flight, they assigned her seat 35F, as no Economy Plus was available. She kept checking for new availability, and on Tuesday, seat 9F become available, so she changed her seat. She continued to check the seat map throughout the week to see if any economy plus aisle seats would open, but none did. Seat 9F continued to be shown as assigned to her.
Today, she went online to check-in for the flight, and her assigned seat was back to 35F. This, not being acceptable to her, called the 1k line to find out what happened and they blamed it on a possible aircraft switch (which it wasn't), or on a "computer glitch". But they did admit that 9F had once been assigned to her.
She then asked about her upgrade waitlist standing and was told she was #22 on the list. (#22 on an "M" class fare as a 1k???) and was also told that 1st class was sold out.
She continued to check the seat map, and a little while later, miraculously, she was offered a TOD to first for $200. Now I advised her to not play the TOD game, but as a very tall woman who is 5 months pregnant, she couldn't bear the thought of having to sit in 35F for a cross country flight, and paid the $200.
So my question is, should she pursue this issue with customer service and attempt to get the $200 refunded or some other sort of compensation, or should she just drop it, be thankful it was only $200 to upgrade, and assume this is how the new United does business?
