After a very bad experience with delayed luggage on UA I filed a complaint with the DOT. About two weeks later I received a call from UA identifying that they knew I had filed a complaint with the DOT, apologizing for the problem, asking if there was anything further they could do, and assuring me that upper management was aware of the problem and pursuing it.
A lot of surprises there. I did not know the DOT identified the author of complaints. UA, with my name from the DOT, found my letters of complaint to UA, my phone number and pursued it. I was surprised that UA called me.
Just a thought: if you file a complaint with the DOT the airline can trace the person sending the complaint. That could work against you.
