UA imposed schedule change: pay for a fare increase on a new flight?

Hello, I spent a half hour looking for a discussion or dedicated thread on this topic but only found scattered comments. I had changes made to my outbound and inbound SJC-IAH-LGA itinerary. My inbound flight SJC-IAH was moved up 2 hours and my layover in IAH increased from 3 hours to six hours due to the computer picking a later flight to LGA and arriving earlier than the original flight. My inbound flight LGA-IAH-SJC had a change of flight in IAH that increased my stay at IAH by from 1.5 hours to 4 hours.

I called the premier desk and was told they couldn’t help me since the ticket was booked on Orbitz so I had to call them. I knew the conversation would go downhill after this. I understand I haven’t flown yet and Orbitz would have primary control of the ticket. I explained I have booked several tickets on Orbitz in the last year and there was never any issue in making changes with U/A. The agent then agreed to help. We discussed some alternate flights from SJC. I then asked the agent if I could fly out of SFO since it is considered a co-airport by UA. The choice of flights are more numerous out of SFO. She said no. She then checked with someone and she then said SFO is treated as a co-airport and I could fly out of there but I would have to have the same fare basis, “g for g‘ and any increase in fare would have to be paid by me if the SFO fare was higher. There was some discussion that if I stayed with choices out of SJC they might wave any increase in a G fare. The agent became agitated at this point and passed me to a supervisor.

The supervisor repeated the above. I inquired about changing my inbound flight LGA-IAH-SJC to JFK-LAX-SJC. (I have done this talking with the premier desk on two identical flights to this one with major time changes since EWR, JFK, and LGA are considered co-airports, paying no fees. These flights are one month apart on either side of the above flight). There was G fare availability but she said the new flight cost $130 more and I would have to pay the difference. Sounded like there was some issue since the connecting city changed? I gave up and just picked different flights out of SJC.

My questions are
1. Due to a schedule change by UA does a new selected flight have to be in the same fare basis? Does changing to Co-airports cause any issues?

2. If a selected new flight is in the same fare basis but costs higher am I responsible for the difference?

3. If the new selected flight is out of a co-located airport in the same fare basis but has a higher fare do I have to pay the difference?

4. If connecting cities change due to a new selected flight, fare bases are the same but, the new fare prices higher do I pay the difference?
