GPU Strategy to Europe

Hi! I'm flying LAX-EWR-ZRH-FLR this Saturday as a 1K on a W fare. I applied a GPU when I purchased the ticket four months ago. The LAX-EWR flight cleared immediately, but the EWR-ZRH leg has been waitlisted while I watched all the seats up front disappear... :( The EWR-ZRH flight is currently J0 Y0, so it's completely sold out (or perhaps oversold). I was looking at other options, and the EWR-BRU flight is the most promising at J6 R4 Y4 W0. There's a BRU-FLR flight on SN that would arrive at basically the same time as my original itinerary. I need to get to FLR by Sunday, but actually any time that day would work so I do have some flexibility. What are my best options?

1. Call UA and ask to change to the EWR-BRU flight? Since it's W0 I imagine there will be a change fee plus a substantial upfare.

2. Try to do a same day change in EWR. I'm not sure if this is possible since the final leg is not on UA metal. Also, I will likely check a bag due to the more restrictive carry on rules in Europe.

3. Hope an oversold situation plays out in my favor. If I volunteer can I get them to route me on a flight with R space? I worry that if I volunteer I risk being stuck in E- over the Atlantic.

4. Enjoy my F seat to EWR and my decent E+ seat to ZRH and keep my GPU for a future trip.

5. ???

Any advice appreciated. Thanks! :)
