Waitlisted for XN didn't clear though XN space was available

I had booked a flight for my partner using miles from my account booked in XN. We are both 1Ks. Waitlisted for an earlier flight using XN space. At T-12 flight still showed plenty of seats but no X or XN space. Flight was early in the morning. Went to bed and woke up at 4 AM. Checked his itinerary...waitlist did not clear. Still showed as waitlisted. I happened to check the inventory on the flight by pretending to book a revenue flight on united.com (expert) and sure enough X and XN space shows available. I called reservations who were able to confirm the space and change the ticket. But I don't understand why this didn't clear automatically. At this point nothing surprises me anymore with UA/Shares, but I find this type of thing very bizarre since it's just not that complicated. What's going on here? I have no faith in "the system" anymore.

Surely if UA would fix this stuff so that it worked in a predictable fashion it would cut down the number of calls to the call center among myriad other benefits for the workforce AND more importantly their customers.

I have to believe MOST passengers would not have bothered to check the inventory to see if this was a mistake. Most would just give up. I sort of wish I didn't have to spend as much time checking up on UA as I do. It also really makes me wonder how accurate the upgrade process is...
