Was in the normal group of hyper-ventilating pre boarders this morning when I caught a glimpse of a service dog and owners boarding ahead of me. No big deal. Flight was packed as usual. Was seated in 1A. Service Dog was with his parents in 3A/3B (as I found out later).
Jet is airborne no more than 10 mins and a smell, which can only be described as being concocted by the devil himself, starting wafting through the cabin. I thought I was going to hurl.
People sitting in 2A/2B were close to fainting!
When everyone onboard quickly determined the poor dog had an accident, the young male and female FA's sprung into action. They remained calm, professional, went and found as many cleaning supplies as they could, brought packs of coffee and managed to placate everyone. They kept smiling, continued with the service (the man in 1D insisted on eating his special order pre order of something with eggs in it) How anyone could eat was beyond me.
I did what I always do in high stress situations. I ordered a bloody mary, and asked them to go heavy on the mary and light on the bloody.
I don't want to wade into the quagmire of the whole "service dog" issue, because there's a new UA mod and we don't want to ruin his week.
All I do want to say is bravo to the crew for handling what was a very crappy situation :)
