Last year I got bumped off a UA flight and received an electronic travel certificate worth $300. I used it last month to buy a flight on united.com. The full fare was $340, and the website applied the certificate and showed the discounted final price of $40.
Today I received my credit card bill and noticed United actually charged me the full $340 amount. I called them to request a refund and spoke to an agent and, eventually, a supervisor. They were adamant they will not issue a refund, and I should have called within 24 hours of the purchase.
I did not notice at the time, but the confirmation e-mail did indeed show the full undiscounted fare of $340. I guess I should have paid more attention, but given that the website displayed the discounted amount all the way to the confirmation page, I did not expect there would be any problems.
There were cheaper alternate flights on that date on other airlines, and I only picked United because of the discount. The certificate expires soon so I don't have much use for it.
Any advice on whether/how to escalate this? Has anyone encountered this problem before?
