United airlines different day standby

This is my first post, I'm not sure where this post should go and I'm sorry if I make anyone mad by posting it in the wrong thread. I planned to fly out of dfw the 13th of August but something came up and I needed to change it to the 9th of August. Went through my options couldn't pay for a price change in the ticket I want because it was to overpriced for a fare less than my original ticket. I understand the rules for the fare. Now, I called United asking about standby explaining my my original dat the 13th and asking them if I could standby on the 9th even though it is a few days earlier... the man said yes. I told him let me explain it to him again because I didn't believe what he was telling me at first and he reasured me i'd be fine. To make sure, I called several times explaining this and asking if I could do this, the answer I got was yes, I even spoke with a supervior. When I called today to find out what I needed to take to the airport, I got and Indian man on the phone telling me I couldn't do this and he got his supervior on the phone as well saying this is not their policy. I asked if they kept any record of these conversations I had with all these people telling me and reasuring me I could do this and he said yes but its in a different location... He was feeding me lines, and couldn't help me at all. I was really upset, because I was told this was ok... I'm wondering if anyone can give me advice or what to do or if it would be possible to show up to the airport, at the ticket counter and get on the flight (their our plenty of seats avaliable). If anyone has and advice about my situation, I'd greatly appreciate it!!!!
