My company purchased my airline ticket, so my bag fee won't be waived even though I have the Explorer card. If I pay for a preferred seat, will that be enough to trigger the fee checked bag since now I will have used the card on the reservation?

IAH to Sydney - Book with Upgrade?
Want to go Houston (IAH) to Sydney, Aus early Feb 2020 in business class for two people. UA has no Business Saver awards available, only full business at 200,000 miles each. An option is to buy in economy and then upgrade for 30,000 miles each plus $500 each. Total cost is $2593 plus 60,000 miles. We do not have any status with MileagPlus except for the credit card. Some questions:
What are the chances of an upgrade coming available, and we getting it?
Is it just as good to book it in economy then try get an upgrade through UA (save the $1000 and the miles for now)?
Would they allow us to go Economy Plus if business does not open up? We do not want to go economy only, would be willing to pay for Economy Plus if business doesn't clear.
Would sure like some opinions here. Thanks in advance.

Should I expect for Economy (G Class) 100% PQM/Award Miles therefore by Brussels Airlines Chart?
Eurowings Chart looks similar, 75% on award miles.
Not bad for $500?

Removing a miles upgrade if you don't get the seat you want
I'm fairly new to United. About to take a full flight to TLV in Y was unable to get a window seat nor Economy Plus.
There is currently one window seat available in Premium Select, so I am thinking to waitlist myself for a PS mileage upgrade.
That being said, I only want the upgrade if the window seat stays available and no window seat in regular Y opens.
If the upgrade clears and those conditions are not met, will I be allowed to refuse the upgrade? Will this create a lot of stress/frustration on the part of the gate agents if it happens right before departure?

BHOLD! It's your gate assignment
Anyone seen this before?

I'm guessing it means that the flight is going to terminal B and has to hold for a gate assignment until later on? This is a 12 hour flight that doesn't leave for 4 hours. Every time in the past that there isn't an assigned gate this far out I've seen them put nothing or TBA or "check boards".

Questions:
1. $931 looks good - do I retain the ability for 24 hour full $931 refund (including the $184 fee for Purchase Upgrade)?
Or, is the $184 Purchase Upgrade fee really non-refundable instantly?
Assuming full refundability, then I'll just do a dummy booking & analyze the receipt for further questions.
2. Is what's happening with the Purchase Upgrade that the itinerary is being upfared to a new through-fare that allows business class booking into D?
If yes, this would suggest if UA ever opens a D seat for GCM-IAH, then I can rebook into D for no-fee, right? Or, perhaps just the $200 change fee?
3. The detailed analysis above shows a way to obviate United married-segment inventory constraints for business by using Purchase Upgrade after Y ticketing.

Hedging GPU Upgrade with Award Booking
Long time lurker, first (or second?) time poster. Apologies if this has been asked before, but I didn't see this answered searching the forum.
I'm a 1K w/ 6 GPUs planning a Summer trip to Europe: SFO -> BCN, BEG->SFO/SJC
I'd prefer to buy economy and use an instrument to upgrade, but after months of searching (been looking since December) I still haven't seen an itinerary with the dates/flights I want.
I bought a non-ideal award ticket at the end of January: only IAD-BCN confirmed in business, waitlisted on the SFO-IAD leg. Return leg has two connections: middle overwater portion is in business, US domestic portion is waitlisted for first class, intra-Europe flight couldn't be waitlisted
Since I'd prefer my GPUs not go unused, is it reasonable to book a paid flight on my ideal route departing a few days before the award flight, confirm PremiumPlus seating if available, and apply the instrument ASAP? If I clear into Polaris, then I'd cancel the award flight. On the surface this seems reasonable, but I see a couple of downsides:
- I lose the flexibility of $0 arbitrary date/flight changes if better options flights show up or plans change. Not likely now, but increasingly likely closer to the flight when the difference in fare is potentially significant
- Assuming I use the travel credit for one flight within a year of booking (very likely), I'm out the $200 change fee. Though I'd reset the 1 year timer on the balance remaining after I purchase a new ticket
- My award flight used the Excursionist Perk, and I'd be on the hook for cost of that extra leg
- Upgrade clears on the outbound flight, I start traveling, but upgrade doesn't clear on my return
I'm sure there are other downsides I'm missing, so please help me poke holes in my plan before I pull the trigger.
Or am I thinking about this the wrong way since the 120k miles I used for this itinerary will drop in redemption value in November? Perhaps I should be focused on maximizing that value now and forget about the GPUs
Thoughts appreciated

FAs doing E to E+ upgrades
I havent seen it happen before, but on a recent SFO/SIN and SIN/SFO, the flight attendant in my section, E+, moved people from E to E+; it happened as boarding ended and the door closed. They were United employees. Is this practice normal?
I am being selfish here, as I had managed to secure a whole row to myselfuntil the FA upgrades happened.

Domestic IN availability to grow
Not sure if this was already posted, but the Skift article had an interesting quote from United, as part of the discussion on dynamic awards:
One area that may grow, however, is the fare bucket for premium award seats for elite frequent flyers. We are very committed to finding ways to increase the availability of the IN [premium award] booking class domestically, said Bondar.

SFO construction reducing available runways
This isnt new, and if its not weather delays at SFO, it seems to always be due to runway construction. That being said, it seems ridiculous that UA would file a full schedule, knowing that its operationally impossible to either a) run an ontime operation, b) recovering from said delays isnt going to magically correct itself, c) its going to create issues for the downward segments of the aircraft.
All the FAs and gate agents giving announcements today made it sound like SFO airport officials decided this very morning to work on the runway, yet like 2 years ago when this was going on, SFO airport officials specifically outlined the time of day they would be doing the construction work.
Pretty poor planning on UAs part of you ask me. I realize delays are inevitable, but they shouldnt publish a full schedule thats going to inevitably result in 2-3 hour delays because ATC is going to have to restrict airflow into the airport.

Award flight cancelled with no notice
On Monday 4/8, I booked award travel (for July 8) using my UA/MileagePlus miles, for myself and 3 family members LHR-YVR-SEA using miles + cash. The flights were operated by Air Canada. I received a confirmation code and 4 emails with eticket #s , and was able to select seat assignments on Air Canada's website after the booking was completed.
I just checked my account and saw no existing reservation -- it does appear under the "Cancelled" heading! I never cancelled this flight; I have not received any phone calls/emails/other communication about a cancellation. My miles (120K of them) are still gone from my account and there has been no refund to my credit card of the $500+ cash I also spent.
Does anyone know what could have happened here? I've sent an email to customer service and will contact them by phone tomorrow, but wondering if this is a common experience. Have they not fixed what happened to Benjamin Jimenez? Glad I noticed before trying to check in for my return flight...
