AC Bid Upgrade- MileagePlus earnings

$

Hi All,
New to the UA elite side, did a search and I couldn't find what I was looking for. I recently was awarded an AC Bid upgrade on a flight to Europe. When I looked I noticed that it changed the booking class to R, which according to the Fly With Air Canada page on UA says that fare class doesn't earn PQM, PQS or Award Miles. Will i still get those for the original class of service that was booked? Anyone have any experience with this?

Was able to change cancelled flight on website (with caveat)

Maybe the website is getting better? Maybe not...

- had a cancelled flight from July 2018 in my cancelled flights list
- for some reason NO details on cancelled flights even show up anymore on united.com; once you click on VIEW the site just reverts back to the CURRENT reservations
- the only flight that shows additional information is the one that has residual value to it
- attempting to use this flight's credit by inputting a new flight gives an ERROR pop-up but still allows continuation
- website correctly allows and displays new flight and associated costs, including change fee
- once booked, the website gives an error
- credit card is charged
- flight shows up in CURRENT FLIGHTS and shows "This reservation has been ticketed and confirmed.", BUT ALSO SHOWS:

A modification has been made to your itinerary.

Please contact United Reservations to have your ticket reissued.
- email turns up immediately with:
An update from United

Action required to confirm change

There was an error processing you request. We’ve changed your flight, but must reissue your ticket. You won’t be able to check in to your flight until this issue has been resolved. Please contact us at 1-855-426-5560 for details and have your confirmation number available.

- overall an improvement I believe, as this didn't even work for me in the past, IIRC
- P.S. "There was an error processing you request"??? :)

downgrade option for UA explorer mileage plus card?

does anyone know if the UA travelbank card will earn miles, thus keeping UA miles from expiring?

Can one credit HA inter-island flight to MP & still get HawaiianMiles bag discount?

$

I've ticketed an inter-island flight directly through HA. I entered my HawaiianMiles number, which I believes entitles me to a discount on inter-island checked bag fees.

It appears that UA now allows MileagePlus credit for flights directly ticketed on HA (within certain fare buckets, like "K" which is what I ticketed). I'd only get the actual miles flown (and perhaps a 1K bonus?).

If I switch my mileage credit from HawaiianMiles to Mileage Plus, will I lose the lower checked bag fee privilege? And will I get any PQM for this inter-island flight?

Tight Connections

Hi FT Community

I have an upcoming trip from TVC to INN and have several tight connections that I wanted input on. Will I make them? Thanks.

1) Domestic->International IAD->EWR to EWR->FRA with 40 scheduled minutes in EWR. Both flights opetated by mainline UA.

2) International->Domestic FRA->SFO to SFO->CVG with 1 hour and 35 minutes. Both flights are operated by mainline UA. No Global Entry. Arriving at 8PM departing at 9:35PM. Lots of heavy checked bags (3 bags of alpine skiing gear). Will either be arriving in Premium Plus or Polaris if my MUA clears - so I will be to the front of the aircraft.

3) Domestic->Domestic CVG->ORD to ORD->TVC with 58 minutes. Landing with mainline UA, departing on UA Express.

Tips for using points for vacation flights

I'm a regular work/biz traveller, and have amassed what I *thought* was a small fortune of 110k points. I'm trying to use those points for vacation travel, and the only available flights are ridiculously long (17hours for an 8 hour flight), or at horrible times (departing at 12:25am).

What's the deal? I'm pounding on the United site, but figure that I must be missing something. Either that, or it's time to move to another airline (or stop loyalty altogether).

Thanks, John

Cancelled International ticket value to apply to only same or greater value rebooking

Hi All,
I just got off a call with United where I was trying to get an ETC by booking a throwaway ticket.
The canceled ticket was for a codeshare with ANA (YVR-TPE), so not exactly cheap.
Was informed that since the cancellation was on an intl flight, the reamining value must be applied to a new ticket of the same or greater value.
And no, I can't use the $ to book a party either.
Anyone come up against this "rule"?
Thanks
Sam

Tight Connection - should I purchase 2 tickets (2nd one for if I miss the flight)?

Hello Flyertalkers!

I would really appreciate any help as I have a flight tomorrow. I have a legal connection (1h6), but I am worried that I will miss the second flight due to the tight connection.
There is another flight an hour later (so total connection time is 2h) - there are very few flights as I am going to the Caribbean (SXM) that was battered by Hurricane Irma.

1 If I miss the connection will United rebook me on the later flight automatically?
2 I was thinking of purchasing with miles the hour later flight and then if I do make the earlier flight I could cancel according to the 24h rule OR does cancelling an hour ahead of the flight supercede the 24h rule and I would be considered a no show (and forfeit the miles)?
3 I have no status. Do you find calling better than standing in a customer service line at the airport?

(It's even more complicated because from SXM I am flying to SBH on a prop plane unconnected to my United reservation and the SBH airport closes at 6pm.)
Thank you for any help you can give me!

SFO-IAD Domestic "First", Polaris Seats. Polaris Service and lounge access?

$

I think this is a simple question. I'm booked on a 772 SFO-IAD with Polaris configured seats in whatever they're calling up front -- their website at purchase contradicts itself calling it both First and Business. Does this count as "Polaris Premium Transcontinental"? Does it have improved service? Does it provide Polaris Lounge access? How does one know if their flight is officially Polaris service?

Thanks!

Historical flight performance data?

Hi al
I’m currently on a very short trip from ICN-CHA. due to the snow in ORD last night I’m still making my way to CHA via IAD.

I’m due to leave this Wed on UA5733 at 17.34 to connect in ORD before going to ICN via OZ. I’m concerned that the connecting flight from CHA won’t make it’s later in the day and could get cancelled or rescheduled due to delays throughout the day.

Wondering FTers would suggest here. I HAVE to be back in ICN by Friday, anytime, but earlier the better.

1) what is the historical performance of flights from CHA-ORD in the evenings - typically get cancelled or delayed?

2) this is an award ticket, would UA reroute me to an earlier flight? (Been on hold with them for 40mins now!)

3) what is the first flight of the day out of CHA where the plane and crew will start the day from? I ask this as I’m on the first flight to CHA from IAD right now but my flight is delayed again as the plane/crew isn’t here yet from the inbound.

Thanks in advance!

Booking with miles Question

I have a simple question that I can't find a simple answer to.

I am going to book a flight with miles and I also have a Chase Explorer card. Because I will only be paying the tax with the card do I still get a free checked bag. Sorry for the dumb question.

Way to easily find Seasonal, Non Stop, Flights?

$

Back in the day, you could download a "paper" compilation of all Departure and Arrival destinations. It would show you the Day of the Week (M, T, etc.), whether NS, and annotate seasonal dates. Is there an easy way to do this now? For each destination I'm interested in, I'm basically just playing a guessing game with entering best guessed day of the week and dates for non-stop flights and trying to pinpoint when nonstop flights end and start for the season and the departure days. It's frustrating and not an exact science for sure.

There must be an easier way, or a way to still bring up the old style airport file, but I can't find it on the web options. Showing my age I guess! Thanks for any help.

Basically, right now I am looking for the NS seasonal information for IAD to: PLS, GCM, SXM, and STT.

Double equipment swap

We’re flying MSY-IAH-IAD and received notifications of equipment swaps on both legs.

The A320 originally scheduled to carry us to Houston (UA 993) was replaced with a 752 so much more recline for the short hop. Surprisingly, one person went fully lie-flat.

The second swap involves UA2091 on the 763 - swapped to a Polaris’d (Polarized?) cabin (model #6449), so the seat change meant we’re no longer next to each other. Fifth Polaris flight this week, will be my first time in the 1-1-1 cabin.

Where to credit UA flights (casual traveler)

$

I used to fly UA but have reduced my travel except a handful trips a year nowadays. Given the upcoming changes to the program, I would like to explore crediting my occasional UA flights (likely cheap economy tickets) to another program.

My questions:

A) Logistics, how exactly to avoid my UA # being associated with PNR. I guess ideally I should not book such flights while logged in to my account, otherwise PNR would automatically associate with my UA #. Or is there a way to change/update passenger FFN?

B) Between AV, NH and OZ, which program is better? In my specific case, primary goal would be TPAC travel or TCON (e.g., east coast to SFO/SEA/PDX). My occasional travel on UA probably wouldn’t yield much accumulation until years after. In terms of milage expiration, NH is 36 months and OZ is 10 years of hard expiration. So is AV actually better (b/c flight activity extends miles validity)?

C) Travel benefit. I have the Mileage Plus Explorer credit card. I suppose I’d loose free checked luggage benefit if my PNR is associated with another program. But how about the 2 club passes?

Thanks for your input.

Economy Plus for Companion

If I book Economy Award flight for myself (Gold) and someone else (General Member) and I put us in Economy Plus, but then cancel myself out of the reservation, will my companion get to keep E+ seats for free?

Where would you go this weekend?

I have a free weekend coming up, starting on April 19 to April 21 (maybe even April 22). I don't have any tickets right now but am looking to get away somewhere interesting on a saver award, be it economy or Polaris. I fly out of EWR, am 1K and trying to decide where I can go somewhere fun and interesting in the United network, maximizing my free weekend time. Lastly I have 2 GPU's expiring at the end of April (extended from last year) which i would love to use, if at all possible. Don't want to spend more than $2000 on economy tickets to upgrade. It will be only me travelling.

Right now the only thing I can come up with is EWR - LHR, leaving at 6PM on April 19 and coming back on the 7:55AM from LHR on Monday. Seems to have plenty of saver awards in economy and Polaris is looking quite empty. Keeping my fingers crossed that Polaris award space opens up closer to booking.

Anyone have any better ideas for me?

Garment bag instead of normal carry-on roller?

$

I'm travelling tomorrow on United (economy transatlantic with a domestic connection). Instead of taking a roller as carry-on, I want to take a suit carrier. Only issue, is that my suit carrier is a bit wider than the size limits published by United. They say 56cm max. My suit carrier is 61cm wide, but obviously quite thin and flat.

Does anyone have experience with how strict United are with carry-on size in situations like this, where the bag might be slightly wider than the published limits, but it still takes up decidedly less space than a carry-on roller bag?
