Phantom upgrade waitlisted?

Hi, everyone! My first post here after just reading and learning from the forum for a long time. Hopefully I will be able to contribute a little as well. Here is my problem: I have applied upgrade points to two legs of a trip. Using a trick that I learned here, I am able to see my place on the waitlist on one of the flights. On the other flight that is waitlisted according to my reservation, the trick shows nobody is waitlisted for it. I have called the 1K desk multiple times and they assure me I am waitlisted for all flights, but I am not fully convinced. Anybody knows how to solve my conundrum? Thanks in advance!

Married segment issue with Award on Lufthansa

I have never seen this before. If I search for an award Athens - Newark I find availability ATH-FRA-EWR on Lufthansa the whole way.


However, I want to take a united flight from FRA - EWR and that option does not show up. Then if I search ATH-FRA LH1285 does not show as available.

Anyone seen this before? Any way around it?

Charging GS for seats in Economy Plus?

When I went to book a flight this afternoon, United app charged for Emergency Row and Economy Plus seats. The only seats that were free to select were Economy.

Is this a new policy? Has United gone certifiably crazy? Has Kirby already taken over with his nickeling and diming?

Using PP for LH marketed but UA operated set of flights?

I have some flight booked in Jan AKL-SFO-FRA-AMM. Ticket is issued by LH but the AKL to FRA segments are on UA metal. Can I use my PP to upgrade from Y to Premium Plus or Business (pending availability)? Is it a case of calling 1k line and giving them the LH and UA record locator and applying upgrade that way?

Also under the new PP system how will it work in terms of multiple UA upgradeable segments on two long hauls? In the past it was 1 GPU for the whole journey, which I managed to do several times. With PP the system seems a bit more complex and there is higher likelihood of having more points deducted...or have I missed something?

Any advice on this appreciated!

What is the benefit of booking directly with United? vs OTA?

Two recent events are making me question whether I should continue booking using United.com/United app. The first, of my own making, is a decision to cancel my Presidential Plus credit card and move to a cash back card. The second, of the airline’s making, is the discontinuation of the United.com club. I used to get extra miles and five bucks per round trip, going forward I will get nothing in terms of miles or money.

My replacement credit card is a Wells Fargo Propel; one of the ways to redeem benefits is to buy tickets through them. I’ll probably buy a ticket this way when I’ve accumulated enough rewards. I took a peek at Orbitz, they have a rewards program that allow you to “double dip;” that is another possibility I’m considering.

Will buying tickets from these alternate sources have any negative impact on ticket charges, IRROPS, or anything else? I’m thinking my 1K benefits offer sufficient benefits in these situations. If there are negatives, they will probably trump the (presumably minimal) benefits of the Orbitz reward program.

Mucho excitement -- this evening (Sunday) I did a same-day change from one packed DEN-SFO flight to another packed-but-earlier flight. There were only two seats open in First on a domestic 757-300, and a $179 paid upgrade was offered. I tried to use my PlusPoints & discovered that a 20-point upgrade was available!

I pounced on it faster than our cats on the laser pointer.

This may not seem like a big deal, but I've never seen RPU upgrade availability ~90 minutes before flight time on an elite-heavy route. How likely does it seem that there will be more PlusPoint upgrade availability? I don't have much confidence that this is a "change we'll like", but it would be nice to have more PlusPoint upgrade options. I do like the ability to upgrade a cheap international Economy fare to Polaris for 80 points.

1K Line - agent performance metrics

Does anyone have insights into metrics being used for measuring performance of customer service agents on the 1K Line (and/or other UA/MP lines)?

I’m sure the post-call survey ratings by the caller is a major factor, but there may be metrics like calls taken per hour or issues closed per hour? Knowing their performance metrics may help us deal with them better.

If I have 3-4 issues to cover, am I better off calling separately for each or try to cover them all especially in a single call or it doesn’t really matter for their performance?

baggage allowance for star alliance gold on ua/ca/nh ticket

I am a star alliance gold (united premier gold) traveling sfo-UA-pek-CA-bom and returning bom-NH-nrt-UA-sfo in economy. I am trying to find my checked baggage allowance (number of pieces and weight) and get some conflicting answers. Can someone tell me which is correct?

1. my ticket in my united account says 2 bags of 70 lbs each for sfo-pek-bom and 1 bag of 50 lbs for bom-nrt-sfo.
2. i called united and the agent said 2 bags of 70 lbs each for sfo-pek-bom (ticket allows one bag of 50 lbs but star alliance gold bumps it to 2 bags of 70 lbs each) and 1 bag of 70 lbs for bom-nrt-sfo (ticket allows 1 bag of 50 lbs, but star alliance gold allows 20 lbs extra).
3. i called ana and the agent said 2 bags of 50 lbs each for bom-nrt-sfo (ticket allows 1 bag of 50 lbs, but star alliance gold bumps it to 2 bags of 50 lbs, didn't ask about sfo-pek-bom).
4. the websites for ana sometimes say extra 20 kg allowance and sometimes say 1 piece of 20 kg extra for star alliance gold.

Can someone tell me what is the correct allowance?

I am also likely to become united premier platinum after the sfo-pek-bom flight - will that change the baggage allowance on my return bom-nrt-sfo?

SDC from Non-UA metal to UA on 016 ticket

I had United’s 016 ticket for DEL-SFO via YVR on AC recently and when I called UA on the day of flight, the 1K agent proactively offered to switch to UA flights DEL-EWR-SFO which was convenient for me. I believe the Same Day Change SDC is zero cost only for UA metal to UA metal with same fate class but this agent said that he is happy to waive the change fee that’ll be otherwise incurred because this change to UA metal allows UA to keep the full revenue from the ticket...

On my next DEL-SFO trip, I tried to do a similar Same Day Change from an expensive H fare class (in coach) on a 016 ticket on LH metal to a less crowded UA flight. But the 1K agent didn’t want to make the change to UA in the same fare class (even though it had a lot of seats open even in lower fare classes like S) without collecting the change fee. I didn’t have the time for HUCA and happily took the LH flight on the upper deck of 380...

Have you tried switching from non-UA to UA metal on the same day (or earlier) and were you able to change without change fee?
I.e. how often have come across agents who are smart enough to see the value of bringing the revenue to UA by making such a change ;-)

GPU Success Rate - UAL vs. LH

Hi Gang:

Need some advice from the wider community on GPU clearance, as my success rate is quite scattered.

I am UA 1K / Million Miler, and fly frequently DEN-FRA - thus have the choice of UA or LH metal.

Without looking at my exact statistics, over the course of ~30 flights over the past few years, I'm guessing a ~80% success rate with GPU clearance on LH (and usually well in advance) but maybe ~20% on UA metal. All tickets booked essentially in at least U class.

Beyond the "goal" of hitting 2MM miles with UA, is there any rationale of forcing the issue of UA metal? For me this is too wide a discrepancy to ignore. Just looking for thoughts or what I am missing, and trying to understand the why?

Ok I need a little help here, I bought this award ticket through united airlines and flying AC for most of it and TG from ICN - TPE. I just checked in at AC and they couldn't check me in from ICN-TPE and they couldn't check my bags all the way through to TPE. Only to ICN. I already have such short connection from ICN - TPE (1 hour 10 minutes), is there anything I can do? or has anyone done the transfer at ICN with checked bags with a short connection?

Arrow vs Shares issue since pass plus changeover

Ran into an issue last night with the upgrade list.

Flying on a 787-10 in paid premium plus using Pass Plus points.

showing top of the business class upgrade list (since I was already seated in P+).

11a was open so I went to the agent to ask to grab that one when he processed upgrades. But he told me his system showed me as number 15 on the waitlist. I looked at it with him and pointed out everyone on the p+ list was before me.

on the TV at the gate it showed me first. He called the local NY GS agent who was rude to the gate agent and refused to want to deal with it.

i called GS and got a super helpful agent (who is actually a GS instructor) who called NY and got equally rude treatment.

at the end of the day I got another agent to look who pulled up shares and it showed me as #2 still not number 1. I cleared but not to the seat I wanted.

i emailed GS who let me know apparently this is a known bug with arrow since the switch over. With multiple GS reporting being passed over on the upgrade list.

moral of the story check with the gate agent and make them check shares. United IT continues to be a disaster.

Hong Kong PMCO 772 equip swap

Hi,

I am flying Newark - HongKong (UA 179 and return to San Francisco (UA 862) during the Christmas break. When I booked my business class tickets in August, they displayed the New Polaris configured 4 across business seats. Now suddenly, they have changed to PMCO 777 (6 across).for both the flights.

Of course, there is a chance that it will revert back 3 days prior to travel - but is this a decision made by UA to revert HKG flights to PMCO equipment? The answer is probably no, but do I have any recourse at all?

Hey All,

New to FT and to having access to GPUs as this is my first year as a 1k. My wife and I are exploring a trip to Japan (CHS - connecting hub - NRT). Currently I'm showing no PZ availability on any of the routes. Polaris is wide open (realize this is a not the way to determine upgrade viability).

Right now I can book into H fare class - but i'm trying to get a sense of what the chances of a GPU working are.

Appreciate your help in advance.

I found many answers, but most we older than 5 years. Please don't beat me up to badly on this.

Will be ticketed on United stock - first flight on SN, in business class, connecting to UA flight, also in business to US. What is the baggage allowance? Deciding which of two itineraries to take.

Buying Individual Bulk Fares Directly from United / United Vacations

Being interested in trans-ocean business class travel I have noticed that if one goes to the United website and prices airfare + hotel one can get some all premium air travel with a hotel included for less than just the equivalent class airfare. However, on the air plus hotel the business and/or first class air is described as "bulk" which may impact elite qualifying. Have others found this a useful way to book premium travel, or is the discount from just regular airfare not enough to make it worthwhile for many to use?

Fare classes when booking with OTA and partners

This may have been covered elsewhere, but I can't seem to find it. I need to find the business fare classes of United and partners when NOT booking on United.com.

I am looking to get the maximum PQPs for 2020 by using partner ticketing (and using earned-miles/5 and earned-miles/6). For instance, I currently have multiple flights booked on a United ticket with partners, only supplying PQPs equal to the dollar spent. I'd consider cancelling, taking the penalty hit, and rebooking an equivalent or cheaper ticket. But I do not see the fare classes for the tickets that are offered. In general, Expedia or Orbitz have better options than buying on Swiss or Lufthansa's websites. (Swiss and Lufthansa both utilize non-*A flights).

Is there a way to know these fare classes before actually purchasing these tickets?
