UA Upgrade Priority Penalty for Proof of Onward Travel Requirement

$

I attempted to check in today using the UA mobile app, after the app notified me it was time to check in for an international itinerary that includes two O/W flights tomorrow. For my flight, the app said, "Documents needed: scan documents or proceed to airport" and provided a "Scan document" icon, in addition to "Trip details" and "Trip options" icons. I clicked the "Scan document" icon, and was led through the process of confirming my passport information, confirming seat selection, confirming no prohibited items, and confirming checked baggage. At the end of that process, the app indicated I couldn't be checked in, and a boarding pass couldn't be issued, because additional documentation was required; but it did not indicate what documentation was required. At first, I suspected I was selected for secondary screening; but then I noticed an option to email me a copy of my boarding pass, and I selected it. I then received an email that indicated, "Based on the documentation provided, you must present proof of a return ticket or onward travel at the airport before a boarding pass can be issued."

I have proof of onward travel; but despite the app asking me to "scan documents or proceed to airport," I did not see anywhere in the app to scan proof of onward travel. I called the Premier Priority Desk and explained the situation, and they transferred me to the help desk for their website. The person I spoke with there told me they only support the website and don't support the mobile app; so I logged into the website, and tried to check in there. I was also unable to check in via the website. The person I was speaking with knew about scanning passports, but did not know of any way to scan proof of onward travel. He further indicated UA does not offer support for the mobile app via phone. He stated my only option appeared to be to provide the documentation at the airport before departure. Since this will delay my check in time, I asked if check in time will affect the order of the upgrade standby list. He confirmed that it would but was unable to offer any solution, other than an apology.

I'm sharing this experience because PAX should be aware that if you book an international O/W itinerary with UA, even if you possess required proof of onward travel, UA may penalize you by not allowing you to check in using the mobile app or website in advance, and forcing you to wait until the airport to provide the documentation, affecting your priority on the upgrade standby list and reducing your chances of an upgrade.

Checking In before T-24. What's your earliest?

So I have a convoluted multi-city itinerary this weekend and due to UA IT the pairing of the flights I got my boarding pass for UA534 HNL-LAX on 12/14 just now, T-56.5h which is kinda crazy to me. What is the furthest ahead you've gotten a boarding pass?

Does anyone else find themselves RESENTING UA and how does it affect your actions?

So I'm a long term UA customer, former GS (but only a few times only) and MM.

With all the recent changes, it's now clear that for UA its all about money not loyalty and I find I'm a bit resentful towards UA. I guess I'm also resentful because of all the changes.

As such I find myself:

i) All things being equal I book the non-UA flight.
ii) Where as I used to defend UA with colleagues I just don't now. I also flat out won't recommend them due to the constantly moving status targets.

For i) I've booked non-UA flights that were hundreds of dollars more expensive and comparable.
For ii) I actively tell new flyers NOT to build their flying "career" around UA as they change their program too often.

Anyone else feeling and doing the same?

Will the Polaris seats replace domestic business class seats?

I've been enjoying the roll-out of Polaris seats on more of my international flights (although I was stepping over my prone aisle seatmate on the 787-900 I flew last night from SYD-IAH).

However, I've been looking for information on whether United will upgrade the domestic business class seats to use Polaris seats. I get Polaris seats sometimes now, when they're repositioning planes. But most transcontinental (formerly PS) flights use 757s, which the United tracker gives no indication will be upgraded. United just announced that the 757s will be replaced by A321XLR starting in 2024. Does that mean we'll be stuck with the 2 across or 4 across business class seats for another 5 years?

Relatedly, have you seen an analysis on whether the Polaris seats take more space than the old seats? That is, can you fit you less Polaris seats in an identical cabin?

UA Adding IAD-BGR/MSN

United Airlines adds 2 more routes at growing Washington Dulles hub

United Airlines will add two more routes to its growing Washington Dulles hub next summer, connecting the airport to Bangor, Maine, and Madison, Wisconsin.

The Star Alliance carrier will begin service between Dulles (IAD) and Bangor (BGR) on June 4, and Madison (MSN) on May 8, United said Friday. Both routes will operate twice daily, with Bangor flown on Embraer ERJ-145s and Madison on either Bombardier CRJ700s or ERJ-145s.

Tickets for the flights go on sale Saturday, Dec. 14.

The Bangor and Madison routes are the latest additions by United at its growing Washington-area hub. To date, the airline has unveiled plans for five new routes from Dulles in 2020, including West Palm Beach (PBI) starting in February, and Akron/Canton (CAK) and Philadelphia (PHL) starting in May.

For the year ending in June, United will operate 5.6% more seats at Dulles than during the same period the year before, according to Cirium schedules. The increase comes even as it discontinues service to Chattanooga, Tennessee, (CHA) this month, and Elmira, New York, (ELM) in January.

“Dulles remains the largest global gateway for local travelers, and we will look forward to continuing to expand United’s superior network from Washington region,” Ankit Gupta, vice president of domestic network planning at United, said in a statement.

United is on a tear at Dulles. The carrier began shifting connecting flights to the airport from its Newark Liberty (EWR) hub as part of a larger effort to boost its domestic share in 2018. The growth has seen costs fall at Dulles, enabling further expansion and a willingness to invest in the hub, with a Polaris Lounge due to open next year.

The carrier is even considering more than significantly growing the number of flights it operates at Dulles by adding more “banks” — or specific time periods when a number of flights are coordinated to arrive and depart together — throughout the day.

United is growing across its map. The airline plans to expand system capacity by 4-6% year-over-year in 2020, with the majority focused in the U.S. The only potential foil, at this point, is when the Boeing 737 MAX will resume flying.

United will face no direct competition between either Bangor or Madison and Dulles, according to Cirium. However, nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) airport has nonstops to Bangor on American Airlines, and Madison on Delta Air Lines.

LH F vs ANA F, and changing award ticket segments

This is a two part question. I am attempting to book an award ticket for February 2020 to Japan. I currently have two options LH J / ANA F or LH J / LH J, with the hope that LH F opens up on one of them.

1) Which is better: ANA F or LH F?
2) If I book one of them and a LH F segment opens up 14 days out, can I swap/upgrade that segment without losing the entire itinerary?

Earning miles on ANA codeshare

$

I recently purchased Premium economy tickets on a UA code share, operated by ANA. On UA, it's "R" fare class which UA says earns miles. But then another note in the fare rules, it says earning on codeshare flights is dependent on the "equivalent fare category" on the operating carrier. When looking on the ANA website, 2 fare categories earn miles in PY, neither of them are R class. R class, in a separate list according to ANA doesn't earn miles.

So... am I SOL on mileage earning for this flight? Anyone know the ANA equivalent to UA's "R" fare class? I dropped $4k for these tickets, I sure as he!! better earn miles.

baggage allowance for star alliance gold on ua/ca/nh ticket

I am a star alliance gold (united premier gold) traveling sfo-UA-pek-CA-bom and returning bom-NH-nrt-UA-sfo in economy. I am trying to find my checked baggage allowance (number of pieces and weight) and get some conflicting answers. Can someone tell me which is correct?

1. my ticket in my united account says 2 bags of 70 lbs each for sfo-pek-bom and 1 bag of 50 lbs for bom-nrt-sfo.
2. i called united and the agent said 2 bags of 70 lbs each for sfo-pek-bom (ticket allows one bag of 50 lbs but star alliance gold bumps it to 2 bags of 70 lbs each) and 1 bag of 70 lbs for bom-nrt-sfo (ticket allows 1 bag of 50 lbs, but star alliance gold allows 20 lbs extra).
3. i called ana and the agent said 2 bags of 50 lbs each for bom-nrt-sfo (ticket allows 1 bag of 50 lbs, but star alliance gold bumps it to 2 bags of 50 lbs, didn't ask about sfo-pek-bom).
4. the websites for ana sometimes say extra 20 kg allowance and sometimes say 1 piece of 20 kg extra for star alliance gold.

Can someone tell me what is the correct allowance?

I am also likely to become united premier platinum after the sfo-pek-bom flight - will that change the baggage allowance on my return bom-nrt-sfo?

Thank you very much.

Upgrade waitlist / display / clearing issues since PlusPoints changeover

Ran into an issue last night with the upgrade list.

Flying on a 787-10 in paid premium plus using Pass Plus points.

showing top of the business class upgrade list (since I was already seated in P+).

11a was open so I went to the agent to ask to grab that one when he processed upgrades. But he told me his system showed me as number 15 on the waitlist. I looked at it with him and pointed out everyone on the p+ list was before me.

on the TV at the gate it showed me first. He called the local NY GS agent who was rude to the gate agent and refused to want to deal with it.

i called GS and got a super helpful agent (who is actually a GS instructor) who called NY and got equally rude treatment.

at the end of the day I got another agent to look who pulled up shares and it showed me as #2 still not number 1. I cleared but not to the seat I wanted.

i emailed GS who let me know apparently this is a known bug with arrow since the switch over. With multiple GS reporting being passed over on the upgrade list.

moral of the story check with the gate agent and make them check shares. United IT continues to be a disaster.

Plus Points upgrade tab display issues

So I have applied Plus Points for my son's travel and on the app it shows the requested Plus Points upgrade for both flights.

However, on the website I need to go into Plus Points Upgrades tab to see the reservation but it displays the wrong travel dates, i.e. shows the first flight a day earlier than the actual travel date but does show 20 Plus Points have been requested for both flights (outbound and return). If I then click on the actual reservation from the Plus Points Upgrades tab it only shows the upgrade request for the first (outbound) flight and not the second (return) flight.

Anyone else see this weird phenomena?
