Flying C from SAN to BRU.

No direct - I can fly via EWR, IAD or ORD. Any recommendations? They all seem to provide lie-flat to BRU.

ANA Shows Award Seat(s) on *A Partners that UA.com Does Not - How Do I Book Them?

$

I have a question that hopefully someone can answer.

I'm looking at doing some award tickets using United points. I know these are flights that would be operated by partner airlines. I have found flight numbers using ITA or whatever.

They do not show up at all on United's website using the award ticket search feature. They do show up if you want to pay for the flight however.

As an example, for October 9th I looked for a oneway award seat between Chicago (ORD) and Warsaw (WAW). I am interested in the LOT Flight #2.

This does not show up as an option on the United site. It does show up on the ANA search tool however. I have seen this flight on the United site before (though not necessarily that date). I did some random searches and found nothing with LOT (maybe because of Dreamliner?)

What should I do? Do I need to go behind every search on United's website with the ANA tool? Another example is Turkish Air. I am interested in IAD-IST-MLE. Using the award search on United you only get 2 connections (ie. 3 flights). If you search for a paid ticket on United you only get the option for a 1 connection flight thru DXB. This is for July 19. I guess this doesn't show up on the award flight as the connection is on FlyDubai?

I guess I have several questions. Do you have to search ANA one leg at a time? If you can find the legs on ANA's site, can you just call United up and have them book it? If so, will United book you on Biz if ANA shows biz is available? I guess this uses United's point chart and not the partner's? How do you trust United's site (and I've found them to be pretty good)? Is this all common knowledge and I'm being a dufus?

Thanks!

Please move if necessary.

NRT-LAX vs. NRT-DEN for Y->C upgrade?

Hello FTers ...

NRT-LAX has been very good for me in terms of getting upgraded using SWU/GPU in the past few years.

The option of flying through NRT-DEN comes up recently and I was wondering what your experience in terms of paid-C load on this route is?

Is it easier or harder to upgrade this route compare to NRT-LAX? The Dreamliner has 4 fewer C seats, but that might not matter much if the load is generally lighter.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Discounted F fares on SFO - ORD route--discrepancies

So I'm booking a trip in August SFO-ORD-SFO. I do the route every 4 - 6 weeks, the majority on UA, but occasionally on AA. Rarely on VX. I'm too old to fly economy and generally book the discounted F cabin (A fares). They typically have restriction for changes (I rarely do that) but have the 1.5 eqp that I like and don't cost me miles or regionals to upgrade. Gets me status quicker, which is fine.

I was surprised at the differential in fares between the major carriers on the route (UA, AA, VX). UA's fares were $1416 RT AA's---$898 VX---$1127.

The difference between AA's and UA's is $518. Significant, IMHO. The flight breakdown shows UA has 18 non-stops per day (summer schedule). AA has 7 non-stops (summer schedule) and VX has 3. UA's equipment has gone heavily into the 737-900, which it is cycling into this route, often with no wi fi or IFE, in an effort to get the new planes going on the route, I suspect. They can get about 170 pax onto the planes.

AA is all 737-800's. All with IFE and most with wi-fi. VX has superb IFE and wi-fi on the Airbus's. FF program not my main one, though.

So, how does one figure UA's product to be worth >$500 over AA's? This one escapes me. I've occasionally seen these A-fares at $1190 on UA, but AA's is almost always much less. Flew UA's 737-900 last weekend with spouse on the p-fare for $1193 each in total sensory deprivation (no IFE, nothing) and wondered why I did it. Booked remaining summer flights on AA.

Still don't know how UA prices it and commands the fare, though.

Rule for getting F space when I miss an upgraded connection?

I recall reading somewhere about a rule that United has (or had) that covered the issues of upgraded F passengers who miss a connection (due to late arriving flight). I think it said UA will give passenger any F space on the next flight, even if only F revenue seats are available.

Does anyone recall this rule and if it has a GG number? It was not in the GG thread.

Thanks

Changing return leg of Y Fare after first leg completed.

So some might know I am stationed in Japan, and the wife came out to visit. She flew the first leg of the Y fare ticket and after she got here we found out that I will be flying home with her. Orginal flight was 9JUN and NRT to IAD, now reroute NRT to JAX on the same day.

Now I am going through the Navy and get the Y fare and match her ticket to mine. I have questions:

1) How late can I change the ticket? We will be flying 9JUN but I do not have my ticket yet, so that is problem 1
2) Will there be a change fee for this?
3) Whats the number to call b/c I cannot change it through the site.

I am looking to get both of us in BF if possible but right now waiting on the government and need to know when the cut off is so I can/will request refund and move to lower GovRate one way.

Valid UA award routing? & Best AMM-HAN Route?

3 Part Question, thanks to all who contribute answers to any or all parts:

Part 1) This is a UA award and I want to check with you experts to make sure that this routing is valid...from what I've read I get 2 open jaws and 1 stopover with a round trip, so I think it's ok. Here are details:

Oirigin/Dest is ORD, open jaw1 in IST/AMM (is this valid to open jaw between 2 regions?), open jaw2 in HAN/PNH, stopover in SJC.
ORD-IST,AMM-HAN(Please help choose routing below),PNH-ICN-NRT-SJC(stop)-ORD (ICN & NRT are flight segments to get me to SJC, not stopovers)

Part 2) If it is valid then does anyone know what it'll price out at in Business class? Not sure if it'll count as Europe (IST), Middle East (AMM) or SE Asia HAN/PNH) award.

Part 3) What routing between AMM-HAN would you guys recommend - I have researched for many hours and have listed some of what I think are the most interesting options (though I may have overlooked stuff so please chime in). I prefer quality instead of speed (I have lots of time on my hands). I will be leaving in Late January 2014, and want to spend probably 7-10 days in Turkey and 7-10 days in Jordan before continuing on to Asia. I plan to fly back to the US the first week of May.

Itinerary (in Business Class):
ORD-IST on TK6 (A333)
OPEN JAW (will use 7500 Avios to fly IST-AMM on Royal Jordanian...is it worth 2x avios for Biz?)
AMM-HAN:
Option 1 22.5hrs: Austrian/Swiss/Thai AMM-VIE on OS854 (A319), VIE-ZRH on OS567 (A320), ZRH-BKK on LX180 (A343), BKK-HAN on TG564 (A330)
Option 2 28hrs: Turkish/Singapore AMM-IST on TK815 (A321), IST-MUC on TK1629 (A321), MUC-SIN on SQ327 (77W aka 300ER), SIN-HAN on SQ176 (A333)
Option 3 28hrs: Turkish/Singapore AMM-IST on TK815 (A321), IST-FRA on TK1587 (A330), FRA-SIN on SQ25 (A380), SIN-HAN on SQ176 (A333)
Option 4 25.5hrs: Turkish/Thai AMM-IST on TK815 (A321), IST-FRA on TK1587 (A330), FRA-BKK on TG921 (A380), BKK-HAN TG560 (A333)
Option 5 32 hrs: Turkish/Thai AMM-IST on TK813 (A321), IST-BKK on TK64 (A330), BKK-HAN on TG564 (A330)
Option 6 19hrs: Egyptair (no alcohol)/Thai AMM-CAI on MS702 (A320), CAI-BKK on MS960 (773), BKK-HAN on TG564 (A330)
OPEN JAW on land in SE Asia
PNH-ICN on OZ740 (A321)
ICN-NRT on OZ102 (744)
NRT-SJC(stopover) on NH1076 (787)
SJC-ORD on Anything that moves
***I am trying to position myself for ANA's Dreamliner staggered business class, which I was booked on last month but was canceled...if anyone has better positioning flights from PNH to NRT, or a more interesting/really nice business class option that trumps the Dreamliner please let me know!

Thanks so much everybody!

PS-if this belongs in *A I apologize in advance, but I figured it's a UA award and this forum gets more views so not a bad fit at least for a few days.

extended layover round trip on points

I'm thinking about a trip from EWR to California using rewards points. I would like to see SFO and LAX, hopefully on two segments. Is it possible to book the departure as an extended layover, for example EWR to LAX with a 3 day layover in SFO, then a simple return trip of LAX to EWR?

Thanks in advance!

Paid for First - Flew Coach

Over a week ago wife and I had two paid first class tickets DEN-GCM via IAH. The DEN-IAH leg was delayed due to weather in Houston and we missed flight to GCM. We had paid for first class discounted tickets "P" fare. The agent at IAH tried to accommodate us but the best she could do was 1 first and 1 coach ticket on the next days flight. The only negative experience was waiting for more than 2 hours for our luggage to be located.

In looking at prior posts, it appears I may only be due a refund if the P fare was more than a full Y fare. Also apparently there is nothing that can be done over the phone. United told me only possible remedy is to go to the "Refund" tab on united.com. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

What's the longest you've sat waiting for ramp crew?

Just landed in CMH (flight 334 from ORD). We rolled up to the gate about 2:45 late (MX delay in ORD), and started sitting.

After 10 minutes, the captain came on the PAand explained that we we couldn't do anything until we got a ramp crew, and that the ramp crew was ignoring us. He also said, "In 28 years, I have never -- ever -- seen anything like this."

And now, after 23 minutes, we just pulled up to the gate.

So... how long have you been ignored by a ramp crew?

UA SYD-MEL on MP award

Hi guys, I am looking for an itinerary from thailand to melbourne. One of the options UA site gives me is connecting from TG475 arriving SYD at 6:35, connecting to MEL at UA 839 some hours later for the SYD-MEL leg. AFAIK united does not have 5th freedom rights on this route (SYD-MEL), however as it is part of an international ticket under the same booking, it would be a valid itinerary right?? (timing is perfect for me)
Txs a lot!!

Turkish Airlines Blocking United Awards?

I thought this occurred mostly with SQ and LH but TK has blocked award seats available to UA. The flight I need is available for the entire month of April with multiple X seats available (no I), the specific date I need there is only 1 X seat available to UA even though there are 5 X available per EF.

Is this common? Thanks

Confused where to buy a ticket to match route on an Award ticket? to Europe

Hi
After spending many hours in searches on many engines (Kayak, Cheaptickets, Expedia, United, Lufthansa, Ita MATRIX etc) I am unable to find a route for PURCHASE that lines up with a Route for an award showing on the United award search. ITA allows you to enter the connecting cities so I see the same flights etc there for a decent price that I like but you can not buy on ITA ...when I go to the other sites mentioned you do not see the routing I'd like to get.

Our route is complicated / multi-city in that we are trying to go from Philadelphia (via Munich) to Split Croatia at the very end of August, then return from Graz Austria to Philly mid-September. The return routing does show up! Going over on award I say via MUC because my husband is a little short on miles to go all the way to SPU so he may have to award from Philly to MUC and buy a MUC-SPU ticket which is fine.

The award routing from Philly to MUC is
PHL - BOS on US Express
BOS - MUC on LU
(then continue on to SPU from MUC on a paid ticket with LU or Croatia)

Several return options also including Air Canada in the mix via Toronto .... no problem finding the return

So bottom line is do you know of a site, other than ITA, where I can search to purchase a trip that involves BOS and MUC specified connections in order to fly across the atlantic with my husband) Thank you for any suggestions.

We have not completed the award "purchase" yet until I resolve the above.

Need to cancel ticket purchased with miles...

Hi - I was supposed to join my girlfriend in Toronto in a few weeks, so I booked direct flights with Air Canada with 25K united miles. Her work has now cancelled her trip, so it's a little silly for me to go.

My question is this: what options do I have? As far as I can tell all I can do is pay $150 to get my miles back. I think I lose the ticketing fee that I already paid ($61).

Is that all I can do? With AAdvantage I know you can sort of save the tickets for later usage, but I don't think United has that option.

Thanks!

If 2 segments of a multi-segment trip are in Y, can I book E+ and waive bag fees?

:confused:I plan to purchase a return ticket YHZ-EWR-NRT-BKK-NRT-ORD-YHZ on discounted Business (Z) fare on a UA ticket and all flights on UA metal. However the first and last leg YHZ-EWR and ORD-YYZ are booked in Y class on ERJ 145's as there is no Business Class seating. Two questions :
1( Will UA want to charge a baggage fee on the YHZ-EWR and Ord-YHZ legs. (No *A status)
2) Will I be able to book priority seats, without a fee, on the same legs.

List oddities 5-22 IAH-DEN

Since this is going to comment both on CPU and standby, I'm starting a new thread. Mods, feel free to move if appropriate.

I boarded last night's flight from IAH to DEN, taking my E+ aisle seat. Not a real surprise I didn't get the upgrade on this route-- as a 1K on an L fare, I ended up 6th out of about 50 on the upgrade list. I noticed on the seatmap that the middle seat was vacant, but standby list was very long (also about 50), so I knew it wouldn't remain empty.

I started chatting with the woman in the window seat and found out she was also a 1K. Since I'm always interested in how CPUs work, asked her where she was on the upgrade list. She didn't know, so we looked it up on my phone. Surprise, surprise--she was #45. How is it possible for a 1K to be that low? She mentioned that she had tried to standby on an earlier flight (a direct from her origin instead of connecting--it didn't work).

The middle seat was still empty, and I had the sense that the standbys were coming on the plane. I looked again at my phone. 24 people had been cleared, including someone into the seat next to me. Odd, I thought, but maybe he/she didn't show up after being cleared. Finally, the last stragglers boarded, including a FA who sat down next to me.

So I really don't know what happened, but I have my suspicions. I didn't have the nerve to ask the FA her name, but I did find out she was going home, not positioning for her next flight. I also noticed the name on the seat next to me never changed (it is still there today). With a standby list that long, I have a very hard time believing a FA was that high on the list. More likely to me is the person assigned to the middle seat didn't show, and the FA ended up seat. Was she next person on the list, the only person still at the gate, or did something else happen? And if she was a late substitute, why did the name on the standby list not change?

Finally, I am the only person who isn't impressed with E+ on new 737s? I had to defend my knees against a reclining seat in front of me. Can't remember the last time I had to do that on an Airbus.

Why am I sitting next to a dog at the IAH United Club?

I'm sitting next to a dog in the United Club IAH.

Her owner brought in some stinky food from the food court and is sharing a sandwich with said dog.

This dog just licked my damned shoe.

How can this possibly be allowed?

Edit: aaaaaaand she's gone. I guess I upset her when she asked to borrow my laptop and I said no.
